Bugs

In Japan, when the spring time comes, a you boys fancy turns to ... beetles. Yes, its pretty gross, but really popular here with young kids. Especially boys. They love playing with and carrying around there beetles. These things are huge, I mean it, probably not much smaller than a mouse. They don't move fast or anything but to me are pretty effing disgusting to look at. Creepy. Especially strange to me as they are also sold in the same place I buy my groceries.

New Car... thanks PR

Paul man, thanks for the new car. With the turbo on, its pretty fast. Surprisingly not too bad to control. This it parked on my desk at work. next to my phone.

This is it on my iPod.

Not a Push Bike

So at least one of my friends has the fastest bike of all of us... actually its probably faster than pretty much anything I will ever own. Unless I get a jet. Its still a nice looking bike Mike F.

Happy Birthday... To Me!

Just turned the big 3.5. Shocking isn't it. Can't say that most of the time I feel like it, although do have to say that when I look at my mortgage I do realize it. On my birthday my Kiyomi (the wife:)) Took me out to a curry shop that I haven't ever been to before. I see it a lot as it is on my bicycle ride home, and also have heard good things about it. Its not far from Shinagawa station, and I know that I am getting close when I can smell the aroma of the food being prepared. The place almost always has a line up outside (the night we went was no exception). The place is small, the food is good and would highly recommend it. FYI... its also close to Sean MacDonalds house if you plan to drop in for a beer afterwards.

Here is some of our dinner:

I highly recommend the place.

Congratulations Kon Chan!

Okay... so I'm a little late on this one, but hey ... shoganai. Congratulations to Tokyo's favorite Bartender... Kon Chan. Kon chan runs what is really my friends and I's local. Its a small little place (which my cousin Paula will agree with... although she still found room to dance after a few drinks). Kon has become a part of our little group it would seem, even attending James' and Nori's wedding in England last year. Well he finally tied the knot himself and is now married. Many congratulations to the happy couple. Here are some of the lovely flowers that decorated the wedding party that he had.

Damn thats a Nice Bike!!!

So I haven't really updated for a while... Sorry, I've been lazy. I also realized that I haven't put a nice picture of my bike up in a while. We actually had some nice weather on couple of weekends a while back (seems like ages ago... especially after all the recent rain). Went out and did a few long rides. This was waiting to meet up with my buddies and complete a 75KM long ride. Was fun!

If we ever get nice weather again... I'm planning to repeat!

PS... quick plug to www.bikely.com (cool site) and here is my ride:

Toyota Should leave F1

I think that Toyota should leave F1. They just aren't getting anything accomplished from all the money that they are pumping into the team. The current rules of F1 don't really allow for them to really benefit from any R&D and trickle down technology. Toyota's big push will be vehicles that it sells to the public (like the Prius) is dual powered motors, and F1 has banned this in any of their cars. Basically this really isn't a good situation for the, and personally I would cut my losses and run. The money they save could be used in proper R&D with better results. Or split it with Marketing if they are concerned about the "brand".

NeXT Machine

We still have one of these kicking around the office. Not actually running anything these days... but it is still here :)) IF you aren't familiar with it, go on Wikipedia and check out NeXT. Proves that not everything that Steve Jobs touches turns to Gold. Some things do fail. And that even if you have the better product people still go with the cheaper one.

Mobile Phones

It amazes me the current coverage of Mobile phones on sites like engadget. I think it is b/c although I've done a lot of tech reading I've stuck with my favorites and really not been a big reader of this site. But it seems to me there is finally a clear push in North America for their mobile devices... despite the fact that they have the best devices available in the world. (I.e. they have the iPhone, the newest and best blackberry's, and a multitude of windows mobile devices) they have the worst infrastructure. Well Japan may have the worst (its great in some ways -fast, clear, and always available) but only if you have a Japanese phone! Yeah 3G is pretty common, but most people I know who come here don't have a 3G handset yet. Not sure about the Europeans, I know 3G is readily available there too, but really is up to people updating their handsets. Some of my friends here change them almost seasonally ( you know who you are you big Belgian!).

Anyhow I also think that in Japan we've had FAR more press on the mobile devices, as it has rapidly become the preferred method of personal computing. (I'm defining personal computing as Web, mail, and web shopping). There is money to be made on phones here, I've even bought a ring tone in the past myself, and I once read that of personal stock trades most are done on mobile phones here. Another big factor has been the great job that the Japanese designers have done in using the standard keypad to input Japanese. It is fast. Even for me as a non native speaker. My current phone (although not 3G) has a 5Mega Pixel Camera, can get on the web, access Google, big clear screen, and cost 1 penny. But to be honest I don't like it. Its a decent phone which is good, but there has been no thought into actually using it. My old Sony Eriksson were excellent.

After all that Ramble... I wonder how the iPhone will do here. As for now, it doesn't offer to much other than any current Japanese phone, other than touch screen.

Angry White Pyjamas

Just finished a good book about studying Akido in Japan. It was pretty good... I can see why some people who were mentioned in it may have been a little peeved, but overall it is fun, and from some of my experiences fairly accurate. Anyhow if you are here, have been here, or are planning to come, I would say it is a good read about one mans "Japan" experience.

Rainy Season

Its rainy season here. I guess those of you who live (or have lived) in Vancouver will know what I mean. Its pretty crap, and most days last week it rained. So didn't get in a single commute to work on the bike. I mean I generally don't like taking the train to work, but then when it is packed during the rain, hot from the humidity, and pressed up against wet people with wet cloths and umbrellas its a pain. Anyhow, we were spared some respite and today was a great day, beautiful and warm. A little humid but still... nice!

Oh... on a tech note... 3G iPhone next week? Seems like it will happen, but really not sure when it will be released in Japan. I haven't been able to guess that yet. I would guess in a couple of months. Anyhow out there have a reliable rumor???
