New Years In Japan

New Years is a big thing in Japan. Its probably more equivalent in a way to Christmas. Its certainly a time for families to get together. There are special types of food (not turkey) that gets eaten... and usually in most families, a pile of drink too. Certainly with my in laws! :) The food is actually relatively cool, which I find a little bit strange considering the time of year and that it is quite cool outside. But it is prepared and then put into a special kind of box, which is opened after the first toast.

Here is the contents of the new years box. I'd mention what it is called... but Kiyomi is sleeping and I really can't remember what she called it. Hey I only hear its name once or twice a year. Then we drink! Sorry folks... if you have to know, please don't hesitate to drop me a mail and I will find out. Here are the contents of the box close up. The stuff on the left is really good and where I first worked in Japan is quite famous for it. The food is called Kameboko, and is actually ground up fish. Doesn't sound good? Trust me it is. Hey, if you eat sausage its a heck of a lot worse for you.



Kiyomi's Mom does some really nice origami. Check out this... there is a Crane folded into the handmade chopstick holder. As well the character is hand painted too. Nice touch I think.
